A list of the books I read in 2023, with a very very short sentence for each.
Middlemarch - George Eliot*: It's hard to say out loud that you love humanity given all the evil we are capable of excusing, but this book will make you say it and mean it.
Half of a Yellow Sun - Chiamanda Ngozi Adichie: Adichie is a master storyteller, a book about civil war and colonialism made with love and wisdom.
The Book of Delights - Ross Gay: This book will make you realize how special and worthwhile your stupid life already is.
White Teeth - Zadie Smith: I think Zadie Smith is a genius and I say that with a full chest.
Upstream - Mary Oliver: Touch grass: The Book
A Light from Uncommon Stars - Ryka Aoki: A charming coming-of-age story with a nice, dark and musical twist. Also, this book is banned in Florida because it's about a trans girl.
Stone Butch Blues - Leslie Feinberg: This book reminds me of a cold winter. A gritty story based on the life story of great Leslie Feinberg
Gender Queer: A Memoir - Maia Kaobabe: A memoir in the form of a graphic novel. Should be read by everyone, but of course it's banned in FLorida
La Mucama de Omicunle - Rita Indiana A crazy story about crazy people (Dominicans). A book with passion but with little concern for 'user experience'.
Berserk (manga) - Kentauro Miura The art is impeccable, vibes are off the sharts, and the stoicist philosophy is right in your face. A good read for those going through it.
The Sandman (vol.1) - Neil Gaiman: Some of the most beautiful art I've seen and an interesting take on superheroe comics. Is the Sandman a hero, villian, concept or god?
Bullshit Jobs - David Graeber: Everyone hates at least 70% of their job. Why is that and what implications does that have for the current state of human civilization? This book is seriously good
The Sound of Magic: Anarasumanara: This is the first webcomic I've ever read and it was phenomenal. Really interesting art style and moral lessons in this one. Highly recommended
Babel - R.F Kuang Much, much better than Harry Potter is practically every way. Also not written by a transphobe. A book about colonialism, translation and cultural warfare.
Invisible Cities - Italo Calvino: For fans of Borges. Calvino provides a catalogue of impossible cities. To be read in a few sittings.
If on a winter's night a traveler - Italo Calvino: A pirouette of a book. Calvino does a magic trick in front of you, but you don't feel interested enough to find out how he did it. A book for people who call themselves readers.
The Door - Magda Szabo: A story about the relationship between a woman and the elderly lady that takes care of her house. Pretty good!
Factotum - Charles Bukowski Bukowski's stellar writing does not aim to hide his rotund selfishness. Read this one a couple of times.
Women - Charles Bukowski Bukowski is an asshole and an alcoholic, and the main character of most of his novels, Henry Chinaski, is basically him. A depressing and funny book.
My Year of Rest and Relaxation - Ottessa Moshfegh A straight arrow of a book!
A Life for Sale - Yukio Mishima - Hecho En Saturno - Rita Indiana - On The Road - Jack Keroac - 2666 - Roberto BolaƱo - Axiom's End - Lindsay Ellis - Death in Her Hands - Ottessa Moshfegh
